David Khang book launch
The Tank, the Poem, and the Uniform will be launched at Malaspina Printmakers on October 13 2016, from 6 until 9PM
The publication is an accompanying catalogue to Khang’s exhibition of the same title in Malaspina’s gallery this past January and February 2016. The project is a new body of work and an extension of two of Khang’s major projects: Globalopoly and Wrong Places. Over the past fifteen years, these projects have been realized through installation and site-specific performances. For this particular exhibition, contemporary printmaking practices are exercised through printed triptych, diptychs, postcards, and game boards. Aesthetics are borrowed from Monopoly in order to unpack conventions around contentious historical references, national and international conflict. The economic domination implied by the board game’s title and the history surrounding the board game’s use are pivot points for Khang’s comical approach to turbulent subject matter.
Contributors to the catalogue include curator Justin Muir, Khang and Dr.Dina Al-Kassim. A reading and discussion of the exhibition was hosted in the gallery by Al-Kassim and Khang in January 2016.
The launch is in tandem with Artists’ Book Week, which is a parallel program of this year’s 5th annual Vancouver Art/Book Fair, organized by Project Space.
